Krabi’s iconic karst towers are the result of thousands of years of dissolution of the areas limestone bedrock. Known as a mature karst landscape, more bedrock has been removed than remains, resulting in large limestone cliffs and towers. The mildly acidic water that created these features also created the caves, stalactites, and stalagmites that are found both inland and along the sea. Not only are Krabi’s karst features mesmerizing to look at, but they also provide for an incredible rock climbing experience for all levels of climber.
With easily accessible climbing all day long, all year long, Railay is by far the most popular climbing destination in Thailand. World renowned as a climbing mecca, Railay has something to offer for everyone. Attached to the mainland but separated by tower karst cliffs, Railay is accessible by boat from Ao Nammao, Ao Nang, and Krabi Town.
Famous for its beach climbing and easily accessible multi-pitch climbs, Tonsai is considered a must-visit for climbers around the world. Intermediate and advanced routes can be climbed throughout the day on different walls. Attached to the mainland but separated by tower karst cliffs, Tonsai is accessible by boat from Ao Nang. It is also possible to reach Tonsai on foot from Railay.
Chong Pli isn’t yet as world-renowned as neighboring Railay and Tonsai, but it’s high density of well protected, fun, and technical intermediate and advanced routes is increasing its popularity amongst those in the know. Located just 6 km from Ao Nang it’s easily accessible when staying on the mainland. Because of the sun, most routes in Chong Pli are best climbed before 1 pm.
